An Interview with the Tweeting Anarchist, Elliot Madison:

When Jackson Heights resident Elliot Madison learned last week that charges against him had been dropped by the Allegheny County District Attorney in Pennsylvania, he had little reason to celebrate. The 41-year-old Queens social worker was arrested during the G-20 in Pittsburgh, while he was using Twitter to alert other protesters about the movements of police. The formal charges were “hindering apprehension or prosecution, criminal use of a communication facility and possession of instruments of crime.”

Madison, a self-described anarchist, is very open about listening to a public police scanner and then tweeting police locations. (His tweet channel was open and advertised on posters.) On September 24, police stormed the room at the Carefree Inn where he was staying with Michael Wallschlaege shortly after the duo had relayed an order to disperse.

Revolt Spreads Across the Globe as “Crisis” Continues to Unfold:

After numerous European governments expressed fear that the unrest in Greece would spread to neighboring countries and perhaps around the world, the spreading global revolt has taken on another tone: that of confronting the elite for their manipulation of the economic “crisis” (which is really a systemic collapse) in order to consolidate yet even more wealth as the masses of the world suffer the brunt of the former’s greed. The spirit of the Greek revolt has not been forgotten, however, for it is clear whose interests the police serve and protect (as America was recently reminded in Oakland).

Six years of war and occupation of Iraq have come and gone. Lives left tattered amongst the ruins. The US armed forces and their co-conspirators in the military-industrial complex, along with their friends on Wall Street and K Street, continue to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan with impunity. Meanwhile, Obama mania has rendered much of the left fixated on electoral politics.

Clearly, we are at a crossroads in the US anti-war movement: we can put our faith in the newly selected President and hope for change, or take direct action to stop the war machine and send the message that we will not tolerate mass murder and occupation.

Shelters across the country report that more people are seeking emergency shelter and more are being turned away. In a report published in December, 330 school districts identified the same number or more homeless students in the first few months of the school year than they identified in the entire previous year. Meantime, demand is sharply up at soup kitchens, an indication of deepening hardship and potential homelessness.

The Galveston Housing Authority will demolish two public housing developments and renovate two others, board members decided Wednesday. Board members agreed to tear down Oleander Homes, 5228 Broadway, and Palm Terrace, 4400 Sealy St., but it’s not yet clear what kind of housing will replace those developments. It will take at least two years to replace that public housing, said Harish Krishnarao, executive director.

Over 1000 illegally assemble to protest World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland:

It was a cold and cloudy afternoon in Geneva when people began assembling on the Rue du Mont Blanc not far from the central train station. Despite a decree issued by the city council a week beforehand banning the protest, between 1000 and 2000 activists showed up nevertheless to express their opposition to the 2009 World Economic Forum, symbol of capitalism and corporate globalization, currently being held in the ski resort town of Davos. Fearing a renewal of the riots and sabotage that had afflicted the city’s commercial district during the 2003 protests against the G8, the Geneva general council, in addition to declaring the protest illegal, had also called in a massive number of police officers, including agents from neighboring France and Germany, to monitor the city centre and train station as well as incoming trains.

Palestine-Israel, Just another week of AAtW struggle against the separation fence and occupation:

Wednesday we participated in the demonstration against the separation fence in Ni’ilon and visited there the Holocaust exhibition in the municipality building. On Friday we participated in the usual demonstrations against the separation fence in Bil’in, Ni’ilin, and Um Salmuna. In Bil’in we had a reinforcement support from the leftist Palestinian Front of struggle. We also had a second wave headed by three local women that brought us up to the electronic fence.

Switzerland, Media, Tear gas fired during violent Davos protest in Geneva:

Protests at the Davos World Economic Forum have turned violent, with police using tear gas to disperse demonstrators. It is reported that a crowd threw bottles at police when they were blocked from entering the city centre. A police spokesman estimated that there were 350 to 400 people in the crowd. He said there have been 16 arrests, though dozens more protesters were briefly detained. The rally, which was not authorised by city authorities, was organised by a coalition of leftists from trade unions along with anarchists known as the Black Bloc.

On January 16, a march and a rally were held to protest the ongoing genocide by Israel in the Gaza Strip. Approximately 300 people gathered in front of 20 Park Plaza, home of the Israeli consulate, to express their outrage and revulsion at Israel’s massacre of the Palestinian people. For over three weeks, the Israel “Defense” Force deployed advanced military weapons against a strangled civilian population while blockading Gaza against any relief or escape. White phosphorus and experimental high-density explosives, as well as conventional missiles, bombs and artillery have been used on one of the most densely populated cities in the world in defiance of the Geneva Convention, international treaties and basic morality. The result has been a humanitarian crisis.
